Black Peter is a popular card game played primarily in European countries such as Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The main objective of the game is to avoid being left with the “Black Peter” card in your hand at the end of the game.
The game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards and the Black Peter card, which is usually a cartoonish picture of a jester or a man with a black mustache. The Black Peter card is shuffled with the other cards and dealt out to the players until all the cards have been distributed. Some players may have one extra card than others, depending on the number of players.
Players take turns asking other players if they have a specific card, such as a King or a Ten. If the player being asked has the card, they must pass it over. If not, they say “Go fish” and the player asking must draw a card from the deck. If a player collects a matching pair of cards, they lay them face up on the table.
The game continues until all matching pairs have been collected and only the Black Peter card remains. The player who is left with the Black Peter card in their hand at the end of the game loses.
